Potty Training Tips For Today’s Busy New Parents
<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>
Many parents can’t wait for their child to begin potty training. For no other reason than that it means, “No more diapers!” Though some children get it within a few days, many more take several months. You will be better prepared if you know the basics to potty training and can make it clear for your child.
For most parents, training starts by age 2. However, for some this many not happen until closer to their fourth year. If you notice your child imitating your bathroom habits, this is a good sign that he or she is ready.
After you have assessed whether your child is ready, you must be prepared with a child sized potty. You may also want to pick up books or videos to help your child understand what is to be expected. Allow your child to sit on the potty when he is most likely to have a bowel movement. He may not want to sit on it right away so never force or push the issue if he seems scared. If this happens, it’s a better idea to put the potty away and try again in a few weeks. Most importantly he must want to sit on it.
Once your child is comfortable on the potty seat you may want to start explaining that this is where Mommy and Daddy go to the bathroom. This is a “Grownup” thing to do. When he is ready, he will demonstrate a clear understanding in using the toilet.
Encourage your children to use the potty whenever they need to go. Tell them they can use it whenever they need to. Some parents at this point may choose to use training pants. Others feel that this defeats the purpose of potty training. Real underwear can also be worn during this time.
Children will have accidents during the day and night. Remember not to get angry or punish your child. Calmly clean up the accident and let the child know he should try and use the potty the next time.
Remember parents, when your child is ready, he will be ready. Good luck and have patience.
