When to Get Rid of your Children’s Bunk Beds

As fun and exciting as they once were, there comes a time when kids’ bunk beds are just not suitable anymore. Usually, bunk beds are not designed to hold the weight of growing teenagers and young adults. Even though there are some full size models out that are specifically targeted toward larger children, there comes a time when it’s time to say bye-bye to your once adored bunk bed. Keep in mind the following.

Bunk beds are typically meant for children aged six to twelve. It seems like a hard and fast rule, only allowing six years of bunk bed fun, but that is a rule, and it’s not meant to be broken. Children under the age of six should never be allowed to sleep on bunk bed. However, the lower bunk is fairly suitable for kids who have outgrown their cribs. Keep in mind though that when children under six are around bunk beds with children who are older, things can get a little dangerous. Be sure to keep adult supervision at its maximum at these times.

As children grow, the amount of head clearance between each bunk can cause some problems. Children outgrow it faster than you think and it can turn into a crammed room very quickly for any growing 12 or 13 year old, sometimes sooner. When your child has difficulties getting in and out of the bed, it’s probably time to reconsider the bunk bed.

When both bunks are no longer required, maybe one child goes off to college while the other teen lays at home, you can easily convert the bunk bed into loft bunk beds for adults. This basically allows the top bed to stay in place while the bottom bunk is removed for a work or play area directly below. For some households, this is the perfect swap allowing for more space in a messy child’s room for a hobby table or computer desk. When the time is right you will know it. Bunk beds do not last forever and as mentioned before, they are at their prime from age 6-12. Anything before or later is pushing it.
