Most new parents are so excited about the advent of a child that they have difficulty waiting for that first doctor visit to confirm a pregnancy. Instead, they rush to the nearest pharmacy or mass merchandise store to buy a home pregnancy test. These kits may be used two weeks after the mother’s egg has been fertilized by the sperm. If used correctly, manufacturers insist that a home pregnancy test is 99% accurate.

Hopeful parents usually prefer a home pregnancy test because they are private and work quickly. The home pregnancy test works by measuring the amount of human chorionic gonadoptropin (hCG) in a woman’s urine. A higher level of hCG will result in a positive home pregnancy test reading while a normal level will result in a negative reading.

The way pregnancy is indicated on these tests will depend on the manufacturer and the price a pregnant woman is willing to pay. A woman first urinates directly on a special stick or instrument or dips it into a clean cup of urine.
