It’s been a while since Jak and Daxter gone up for a decent adventure. The last true team-up was James III of 2004, there was “WTF” kart racer known as Jak X, and so Ottsel struck out on his own in 2006′s portable Daxter. After these titles, dropped Naughty Dog PS2 and moved on to Uncharted on PS3, while Ready Dawn took his skills to the PSP God of War: Chains Olympus. For a while, slipped Jak and Daxter in the dark.

Now High Impact Games bringing the duo back in Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, a platform / dogfighting story landing on the PSP and PS2 this week. For the most part, are entitled to return to the simpler days of double-jumping through Jak and Daxter: The Precursor’s Legacy (no Dark Jak), but some technical problems keep it from being a fantastic experience.
See James get the bad guys in our video review.
The Lost Frontier pick up with Jak, Daxter, and Eco Sage in training Keira on the edge of existence. Like Eco their world is in an alarmingly short supply, and our trio trying to get to the bottom of what is going on. Soon their confidence Hellcat aircraft was shot down by sky pirates, they encounter an old dude with no memory, and James begins to learn nifty new abilities.
Now, because Eco is all out of whack, Jak can not assume his Dark Jak form – all white monster from the previous games. But throughout your journey, you will run into Precursor idols that will grant Jak amazing abilities. He will be able to slow time, creating a bubble shield, generate massive columns, and create a glowing ball that explodes when shot. These features play in one of three main parts of this game – platform game.
Yes, like the first Jak game, there are a lot of platforms you have to jump to. There are poles to swing off switches to throw, and so on. At the end of the game, Jak will have a small arsenal of weapons, but they take a backseat this time around to jump from one ledge to another. For the most part, this was great focus. I loved the original Jak games, so there were a few moments in here – namely the puzzles that required me to make a shield, teleport, and think – where I was able to sit back and just take in the much fun I was having and how much I had missed it.
The problem is that the PSP is a crappy place to put a platform game, yeah, I said it.The lack of a second analog stick for camera usually leads to problems, and that’s exactly what happens here. Lots of times the camera was locked into a position where I could not see how much space I had to make a jump. Other times it was too zoomed in and I could not see where the edge of a ledge was. Another drawback is the inability to lock on the villains or strafe. It means that I was often surrounded by villains and just had to run on-screen shooting, hoping to hit enemies I knew was somewhere in front of me.
Daxter’s scrap mini-games are fun, but goes on a bit long.
These issues make The Lost Frontier frustrating when it does not need to be.
The next third of gameplay pie is dogfighting, and it’s actually pretty cool. In the beginning, I climbed behind the controls of the Hellcat and found it a bit too sluggish for my taste, but there is this solid adaptation element to The Lost Frontier, which lets me make the plane faster, stronger and all-around more kickass. There are five planes to unlock by playing the missions or buy straight up. Each of these planes have weapons and abilities slots. You can fill these slots with armor, machine guns, lock-on missile speed increased, and so on, but you can unequip the forces and move them to other planes.
This is an awesome idea. There is a computer terminal at your pirate hangar where you can buy upgrades with scrap metal you have earned in the sky. Now normally, I would be very scientific about when to buy wing armor vs where to buy lasers, but see how I could put anything I wanted on a plane and know that I could remove it and add it to any other awesome flight I would get later, I just bought what sounded good at the time.
