Life with a premature baby in NICU

All babies are precious, premature babies unmistakable so; they appear so tiny and fragile, yet they can be incredible strong too.  When a baby is born prematurely it can be a very traumatic experience for both mother and baby, even so friends and family will want to congratulate you, accept these congratulations and don’t let what ifs spoil such a momentous occasion.

When you see your baby in NICU for the first time it can be very overwhelming due to all the tubes and monitors that your baby might be connected to.  It can be difficult not to let your mind wonder to all the possible medical complications that your baby might suffer from.  Don’t sit around worrying about all the medical equipment ask the medical staff to explain what each tube or monitor is for, once you understand what all the various medical equipment is for you won’t feel quit so overwhelmed and within a few days the wires and tubes will fade into the background and when you look into your little ones incubator all you will see is your precious baby.

Often a premature baby will have special needs, your baby might be connected to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mechanical ventilation or he or she maybe being tube fed.  You may possibly feel there is little for you to do, this is not the case there a many things you can do for your baby.  Take lots of pictures and keep a journal of your baby’s progress, you might like to ask someone to buy you a copy of Starting Life in NICU which is specifically designed so that parents can record their premature baby’s important magical moments such as the first time you get to hold your baby, baby first proper feed, baby’s first bath and magically monitor free. In the years to come you will be able to look back through the photographs, touch the tiny premature baby clothes that your baby once wore with a warm glow inside.  These simple items will very quickly become your treasured keepsakes, a reminder of your baby’s first few months.
