Safe and Environmentally Friendly Toy Buying Guide

We live in a world where we all strive to be more informed consumers. We strive in our shopping to make environmentally friendly choices and to make budget conscious decisions, but when it comes to the toys and products we give to the children in our lives ensuring that those products are safe and healthy for our little ones is paramount. Considering the surge in recalls of mass produced products relating to children over recent years, the question of safe toys is in the forefront of all of our minds. Finding toys that are environmentally friendly, budget conscious and safe for our children is achievable. The first step in achieving this is to know your materials. Here is some information on what to look for.

For fabric clothing or toys, opt for unbleached organic materials. Unbleached organic cotton or bamboo fibers decrease the possibility of negative chemical reactions when your little one’s skin touches the material. So too, as organic materials are grown free of any synthetic agricultural chemicals (fertilizers or pesticides) they also prove to be the more environmentally friendly option. Organic cotton plush toys, baby clothes, and baby accessories are becoming much more accessible and are mostly comparable in price to the non-organic options.

For hard toys, choosing wood rather than plastic is the safe, environmental and budget conscious choice. Wooden toys are made of natural and not synthetic materials; they also tend to be free of harsh chemicals (though you will want to ensure the finishing is also safe, as described later in this article). In addition, the durability and longevity of wooden toys when compared to their plastic counterparts also make them the more economic choice. More and more toy companies are turning to Reclaimed Rubberwood sources for toy production. The Rubberwood tree is a sap-making tree that produces latex for a life cycle of only 25 years, after which these trees are cut down and new ones are planted. Rubberwood is not only an extremely sustainable choice but it is also a very durable hardwood that makes wonderful furniture and toys.

There is also a great deal of fear right now aimed at the soft plastic, or rubber materials we give our children (baby bottles, bath toys, drinkware, teethers and the like). There is understandably much concern with the bisphenol A (bpA) and the phthalates that had traditionally found its way into some of these kinds of products. Glass and bpA-free alternatives are becoming easier and easier to find. Thankfully there is a growing number of inexpensive products made from natural rubber and other bpA free, pvc free and pthalate free materials. So too natural rubber is readily biodegradable and can be harvested sustainably without the use of herbicides, making it a strong environmental choices as well.

As already stated it is important to ensure that all finishes and paints are safe as well. The best way to do this is to select products for your children that use water-based or vegetable-based paints and finishes. These more natural paint choices are not only the safe choice as they are free of toxins, lead and potentially harmful chemicals, but for this very same reason they are also the environmentally friendly choice as well. Toys and products made with water-based or food-based paints and finishes also help us avoid potentially environmentally damaging chemical runoff when we wash them or when they are left out in the rain.

The most important part of being a safety and environmentally conscious shopper is to do your research, stay informed and never be afraid to ask questions. In this day and age remember that it is a store’s responsibility and obligation to have all of this information on hand and to make sure that their employees are well versed on exactly what is in the products that they sell.
