Cosleeper Guide: Safe Family Bed Sharing Made Easy

Co sleeping with your baby is wonderful and convenient but it has one huge downside: it can kill your baby if you don’t do it safely. This cosleeper guide shows you how to cosleep safely and comfortably.

If you’re like many young parents, you may not even consider co sleeping at all; it could be unsafe and it disturbs your own sleep and privacy. But then again, there’s a good chance you end up taking baby in your bed in the middle of yet another crazy sleepless night anyway… unsafely since you weren’t prepared.

Or you may be convinced of the wonderful benefits of cosleeping: extra protection for your baby (when in safe conditions), more sleep for you and your baby, no-fuss night feedings, improved bonding,… but still worry about accidentally rolling onto your baby.

The good news is that there are several practical solutions to help you cosleep safely without losing any comfort. No need for you to miss out on the wonderful co sleeping benefits. There is bound to be a solution that fits your family and bedroom perfectly

Safe Co Sleeping Solutions

The most practical and safe solution is a full-size cosleeper bedside crib. This is a clever half-open crib that attaches to your bedside. Your baby has her own space to sleep in, and so do you. No loss of comfort there to disturb your sleep.

All the while, your baby is very close to you which gives you all the practical benefits of cosleeping. These include no-fuss night feedings and you can react timely if your baby is in trouble – like breathing or heart rate problems.

The ease of mind for you, and your presence for your baby are like magic sleep potions for you and your baby to sleep wonderfully well.

Added benefit: when it is time to transition from co sleeping to sleeping in her own crib: your baby is already used to sleeping in her own crib. The step to sleeping in a ‘standalone’ crib is so much smaller now.

This type of cosleeper can be pricey but they do double as a standalone crib and some also as a playpen or toddler bench afterwards which usually makes up for the price very well.

A cheaper option are the in-bed mini cosleepers. They create a private sleeping space for your baby in your bed. It is simply a (firm!) mattress with sturdy walls. You place it on top of your bed, at the height of your own pillow. All co-sleeping safety measures to avoid you rolling over to her, or your covers getting on top of your baby must be in place.

One important warning: do not use the baby sleep positioners delivered with most of these mini cosleepers, of the Snuggle Nest type. They are supposed to keep your baby on her back to be safe from SIDS. But they are unsafe: babies have died after getting stuck in them or between positioner and the crib side.

Also when using a mini cosleeper like this, I usually advise to keep baby between mom and a wall. Moms, especially when breastfeeding, have the natural instincts that keep her alert even when sleeping. As a mom, you will react better to your baby’s needs.

Obviously, do make sure there are no gaps or crevices between the mattress and the wall where your baby could get stuck.

You can also choose to simply rearrange your bed and bedroom and transform your bed into a family bed. Baby then simply sleeps in your bed, like you. The Cosleepers Guide has practical tips (including a layout scheme) to help you do this in a safe way at low or no cost.
