Cotbed – Choosing the Right Bed and Mattress for Baby

If you are expecting a new baby or just looking for a new bed or mattress for your little one, you will find that there are many options.  The style of the bed is only the first of many choices that you will need to make, but it is a good place to start.  When thinking of the style you want, think of the theme of your nursery and the overall style of your home.  With the style choice out of the way, you can begin to browse from the thousands of bedding options.  A cotbed is a great option because it can be used for about 5 to 7 years.  They convert easily to a toddler bed and may even include storage drawers for tight spaces.

A cotbed mattress can be made in several different ways.  A foam cotbed mattress is the most basic mattress available, but is hypoallergenic and easily cleaned by removing the outer covering.  It is also the most economical mattress available and can be used as a toddler bed mattress as well. There are also eco foam mattresses for cotbeds that are better ventilated than the basic mattress and include a quilted removable cover.  This is a bit more expensive, but may prove to be worth the extra investment if you live in a warm environment.

A sprung cotbed mattress is another option for your cotbed or toddler bed.  The sprung mattress offers even weight distribution which provides more support for your little one.  A basic cotbed mattress is a great value and most include a removable cover that is easily washed and dried when needed.  High end sprung mattresses provide the ultimate amount of support and weight distribution and offer better ventilation to keep baby cool and comfortable throughout the night.  This choice is more expensive than a foam cotbed mattress, but may be a better choice for your baby.

If you are planning to keep baby at your bedside after you bring him or her home for the first time, you may also want to consider a swinging crib.  The crib can only be used for around 3 to 6 months, depending on the size of your baby, but are perfect for parents who want their baby close by.  A Moses basket can also be used, but has the same time constraint.  Many people choose to use a crib or basket for the first 6 months, especially if the mother is breastfeeding.  When deciding which option is right for you, consider if you will be able to use it for future children and if it will grow with your current child.
