Baby Proofing Your House

Having a new baby in the house changes everything, and I mean everything.  From having to get through the day with much less sleep, to the daily grind of meeting the needs of that small cranky stranger in the next room who is demanding food, clothing, and a college education, it is pretty safe to say that life as you once knew it has ended.

Of course having a baby in the house also means that you have to take the appropriate steps to make said house a welcoming and inviting environment.  Naturally they can’t move on their own right away, but you need to anticipate and make sure that as they grow that they don’t get into trouble.  Baby proofing your home is a vital step towards providing that safe, nurturing environment for them to grow up.

You actually start out when they are infants.  Use a crib that was manufactured after 1992, which should be up to date on safety standards set forth by the American Society For Testing And Material (ASTM).  Make sure the crib mattress fits snugly, to prevent your child from sliding between the mattress and the crib.  Do not use any crib that has elevated corner posts or cutouts in the headboard as this could cause the baby’s head to become trapped, possibly leading to strangulation.

Make sure the crib is assembled solidly to eliminate the chance of it collapsing, and never put any pillows, soft bedding, electric blankets, or stuffed animals in the crib.  Again, these are items that could stifle or even cut off breathing if the baby happens to wriggle or roll into them.

Make sure all cribs or playpens (for older children) have slats that are 2 3/8 inches apart or less to prevent the baby’s head from becoming trapped there.

Always use safety belts on changing tables, seats, or swings, and place a rug beneath the changing table, as this will provide some cushioning in the event of a fall.

Babies are sometimes soothed by the presence of a nightlight, but the light should be placed at least two to three feet away from any curtains or bedding to prevent the likelihood of a fire.

You should also set your water heater to 120 degrees or less to prevent possible burns at bath time.  Remember, it may not feel that hot to you, but could cause serious discomfort or injury to your baby.

Once your baby starts crawling, then walking, a whole new degree of difficulty emerges.  At first, you were afraid of what they might accidentally do.  Once a child can move under his or her own power, it is almost as if they seek out those things which are most dangerous to them.  It is important to anticipate this and prepare for it.

One of the easiest ways to determine potential problems is to get down on your hands and knees, basically get down to their level, and look around.  See what is easily accessible from this height and address it.

If you find any loose objects such as coins, balloons, nail clippers, pretty much any small object you can name, move it out of reach of your child.  Anything small enough to fit in their mouth should be considered a choking hazard.

If you have mobiles or other toys hanging in the crib, remove them as soon as your child is able to reach up and touch them.  Keep drapery and blind cords up out of reach, as children die by becoming entangled in these cords every year.

Those doorstops with the rubber tips?  The tips that come off?  Get rid of them.  They are choking hazards.  One piece doorstops can be had at very low cost.

If you are using a trunk as a toy box, make sure there are holes to allow air if the child should become trapped inside.  Better yet, make the lid removable.  This takes some doing for a child to become trapped in a trunk, but it has happened.  Don’t let it happen to your child.

Locate any dangerous substances and lock them away in an upper level cabinet.  This includes, but is certainly not limited to, alcoholic beverages, cleaning supplies, medications (forget the childproof cap, kids go right through it), paint, gasoline, pesticides, etc.  Basically, if it isn’t designed to be eaten, move it.

Cover every electrical outlet in your home with a plastic cover.  This is important.  Small fingers can easily reach far enough inside those small openings to get a serious electrical shock.

Place screened barriers around fireplaces and radiators, basically anywhere that a child might get their hands burned.

Position TVs and stereo equipment so that the child cannot pull them over on top of them.  Likewise, secure all bookshelves, and bureaus to walls to prevent the child from pulling them over.  The weight of a falling piece of furniture is sufficient to seriously injure or kill a small child.

It takes a sharp eye, and it probably cannot be done in a day.  You will notice things here and there that you missed.  Take care of them as soon as you notice them.  Make sure your home is a warm, cozy, and safe place for your baby to grow up.
