Natural latex foam crib mattresses

By far the most widely sought-after type of foam is that which is made from the sap of the hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree of Brazil). Its popularity stems from its durability, its supportiveness and porosity, its being hypo-allergenic and its being deterrent to microbes and mites. Among the different foams, this is certainly one of the more durable ones. In spite of its being hypo-allergenic, however, the incidence of people – including babies – developing allergies to latex is not uncommon. Apart from that shortcoming, we can say that latex foam is by far the best type for foam crib mattresses.

Medical grade silicone mattresses

Babies who are sensitized to latex may use foam crib mattresses made from silicone. The material is synthetic but is not derived from toxic petro-chemicals. Instead it is manufactured by combining oxygen, carbon and hydrogen with the metalloid form of silicone. This material is used widely in medicine and is not hazardous to health. It is, however, expensive.

Memory foam crib mattresses

Originally meant to be used in outer space, this type of synthetic foam is very comfortable. However it has been discovered to emit harmful gases into the environment. Its use for astronauts was discontinued but some manufacturers are making foam mattresses made out of it for the consuming public. Although the dangers of memory foam are continually debated, the fact that it is controversial alone should discourage moms from using them for foam crib mattresses.

Foam that has been derived from the oil of plants

Even if it is still comparatively exotic, plant foam is becoming more and more popular today. Although man-made, the raw substances of plant foam are vegetable in nature and the resulting product is non-toxic when pure. The feel of this foam is softer than latex. It approximates memory foam in feel and texture and is sometimes referred to mistakenly as memory foam. It hugs the body of the baby snugly.

A word of caution is required. Although plant foam is basically derived from plants, some manufacturers imbue it with synthetic chemicals to improve its durability and resistance to flame. The process, however, make it noxious. Anyone who is shopping around for this type of foam should meticulously inquire about the purity of the material and whether it was treated extensively with dangerous chemicals. In general, foams that have been proofed against fire and other destructive elements have been impregnated with petro-chemicals that also render them harmful for use as foam crib mattresses.

The variety of different foam materials available today makes it difficult to identify, let alone, select the right type for foam crib mattresses. Knowing the more popular types, their inherent traits and possible side effects should enable the consumer to be discriminating and to specify the foam that will best promote the health and comfort of the baby.
