Understanding Crib Mattress Dimensions

Do you know what the crib mattress dimensions are and why they are the size they are? Most people have no clue why crib mattresses are the size they are when the children sleeping on them are often times as big as the bed. For those that don’t know the exact dimension for a standard size crib they are, 52 inches long by 28 wide and 6 inches deep.

The reason the standard crib mattress dimensions are this size is not because they are more comfortable, it is because they are build in regards to the standard size child crib. A standard size child crib is 60 inches long by 36 inches wide and the reason they make it this way is so a baby can sleep in the exact center without hitting the sides. Most people don’t get why crib mattresses are made the  way they are but just know that they are that way for a reason.

The reason the crib mattress dimensions are created around the size of a standard size crib is because they need to fit inside the crib without giving even the slightest amount of space between the mattress and the cribs sides. If a mattress isn’t snugly pushed down in the crib then it is too small. Children are very small and with that if there is anywhere that you can put one of your fingers then rest assure that your child can put theirs there as well. Never take your child for granted no matter what age they are, doing this will result in injury to your child.

Another thing you need to know about crib mattress dimensions are that they should never be messed with. If your child is outgrowing their mattress don’t try to shove blankets or anything else in a bigger crib just trying to make the mattress work, this will be very dangerous for your child. For your child’s sake, it is always better to spend a little extra money buying a new mattress than try to make an old one work.
