How Safe Are Convertible Cribs?

The number one priority for parents when shopping for convertible cribs should always be safety. This is one factor that you simply can’t put a price tag on. A crib is where your baby will be the majority of the time. And while we would like to believe that all convertible cribs in are extremely safe, the truth is some are more safe than others.

A convertible crib can be an excellent investment. If the one you buy stands the test of time, then you won’t ever have to worry about buying another bed for your child. That is quite convenient, not to mention the time and money you will save over the years. Most are 4-in-1 cribs, meaning they can transform into a toddler bed, day bed, and a full-sized bed. You can find some that are 3-in-1, which means they don’t convert to a full-sized bed. These aren’t nearly as common, but do cost less.

One of safety concerns that convertible cribs had not too long ago was the drop side. While this element was convenient for parents, it’s not safe for the baby. Drop sides had a tendency to fail, either by falling of completely or becoming loose. Infants were actually able to push them out just by leaning up against them.

In the last decade, a little over 30 infants and toddlers were reported to have been killed because of the drop side. Though, this number is more certainly a conservative one.

Because of this, millions of drop-side cribs were recalled and now are no longer produced. For this reason alone, convertible cribs specifically have become far more safe.

Convertible cribs have a mattress adjustment feature, where it can be moved up or down to make it easier for parents to reach in. Most cribs have three levels of adjustment, but some do have four. This helps make up a bit for the lack of a drop side, while still keeping the crib safe.

The primary way to evaluate the safety of any convertible crib is noting whether it’s JPMA certified or not. JPMA evaluates baby products, such as cribs, and certifies the ones that pass their safety tests. So if you don’t see the label “JPMA Certified” on the product description of a crib, then it’s best not to buy it.

Safety has become a much bigger priority for manufacturers, so this isn’t as much of an issue as it has been in the past. Just to be sure however, always read customer reviews on cribs before buying.
