Positive Digital Clearblue Pregnancy Test
Clinical chemistry
Two pregnancy tests were performed in a laboratory experiment using two methods:
- ELISA (enzyme immunosorbent assay)
- Home pregnancy tests kits
The results obtained on the ELISA test were as follow:
Sample 1: negative control
Sample 2: positive control
Sample 3: non pregnant
Sample 4: pregnant
Question 1
What do these results mean? (In terms of how pregnancy tests work in a lab setting)
According to the results obtained, the first sample implied that, hGG was absent since the sample used was pre-determined for the absence of hGG before performing the rest. In sample 2, the sample was taken from a confirmed individual for pregnancy, as the results showed the presence of hGG. These control experiments were to determine the efficiency or accuracy of the tests. In samples 3 and four, the hGG was absent and present respectively; implying that, individual with sample 3 was not pregnant while that of sample 4 was pregnant (Rutherford 46).
The results obtained on the home pregnancy tests kits were as follow:
Sample 1: non pregnant
Sample 2: non pregnant
Sample 3: positive (1-2 weeks)
Sample 4: positive (1-2 weeks)
Sample 5: positive (1-2 weeks)
Question 2
Why do you think these results do not always agree with the serum test results?
What possible reasons could there be for this?
The results obtained in the urine test do not agree with the serum test because, the home pregnancy test has been revealed to result into 25% false rate. This is especially when the pregnancy is a few days old; in which hGG would be produced in very small amounts. Such small amounts of hGG may not reach in the urine, resulting into false tests. In other cases, the test may negative even one is pregnant, which may result when hGG is highly reabsorbed in kidneys (Boyd 69).
Question 3
You are provided with a solution of 100 mlU/ml hCG diluted in non-pregnant urine, and 5 Clearblue digital pregnancy test kits between the whole group. Device and conduct an experiment to ascertain the limits of detection of the Clearblue pregnancy testing kit and conduct it ( write up the method).
Method
The mIU/ml solution was measured into various portions and then mixed with a standard amount of urine in all the solutions. The mIU/ml solution were measured into the following proportions: sample 1 50mIU/ml, Sample 2 17 mlU/ml, Sample 3: 6 mlU/ml, Sample 4: 2 mlU/ml, Sample 5: 0.7 mlU/ml. The results were then observed for colour change, and the results recorded as below (Cigliana 79).
RESULTS
Sample 1: 50 mlU/ml: positive
Sample 2: 17 mlU/ml: positive
Sample 3: 6 mlU/ml: negative
Sample 4: 2 mlU/ml: negative
Sample 5: 0.7 mlU/ml: negative
Conclusion:
what are the limits of detection of the Clearblue Digital test kit?
The limits of detection of the Clearblue digital test kit is 50mIU/ml
