The Truth about Toddler Pillows
Is it time for a Toddler Pillow? We, as adults use pillows without second thought. When we sleep it’s expected that we use one and is perfectly normal. As a matter of fact, sleeping with the absence of a pillow can leave us waking up with a stiff neck and joints. Very painful. It probably stopped us from falling asleep in the first place. Most parents assume that their child will be more comfortable with a pillow and everything will be fine. What you need to ask yourself if where are they sleeping and how they are.
If you have a child that is younger than 2 years of age, they should not be using a pillow. There is a risk of them suffocating and children under this age usually do not need support for their head when they are laying down. If your child is at the age where they have started walking or climbing, then they could use the pillow as a boost to get out of their crib.
Your baby should be at least 2 years of age and already in a toddler bed before using a pillow. It’s not always necessary for a pillow, even at the toddler age. There’s really no need to introduce a pillow if they are sleeping good without it.
Make sure you are using a baby sleep pillow when you do decide to give your toddler a pillow. They should be using just any adult pillow that you have around the house. Your child should not be able to sink into it when they are sleeping, so the pillow should be kind of firm. It should be easily washable in case your child has a little accident as well as smaller than a regular pillow. They should be around the size of a travel pillow. Keep in mind to buy a toddler pillow that is non-allergic just in case your child suffers from any allergies.
If you are still not sure if your toddler is ready for a pillow, speak with your doctor. You can also wait until they show signs of struggling with their sleep or when they actually ask to use a pillow.
