Five Musts for Your Zion Park Camping Trip
It’s not too early to plan your Zion National Park travel. Reservation times begin the first part of March and Zion Park lodging and campgrounds fill early for the spring and summer months. Each year over two million parents and children enjoy the wonders of Zions Park and you can too. Thinking of camping part of the time? Here’s five must brings for your children to enjoy your family camping trip to Zions Park.
1. Safety. Before you even begin any camping trip, take time to go over basic out of doors camping safety tips with your children. Help each child put together their own fanny pack survival kit, explaining what each item is and how it is used. Hopefully you and your children will never need these individual packs, but being prepared is never out of style. These Zion Park safety kits should be small enough for each child to carry their own, and use the items each day as required and then replenish the kit with additional items at night. One of the most important items to include in your kit is a whistle (can also be carried around the child’s neck)—this is not a “fun” item, but should be used only if the child gets lost or needs help. Teach your child that three blows on the whistle says they need help. Your Zion Park safety pack should also have a small bottle of water–not for the day’s drinking, this is for emergencies. Include Sun block, Band-Aids, a couple of energy bars, and small flashlight.
2. Personal items. Even though you might be tempted to try a “back to nature” camping trip with your children, you’ll have more success on your Zion Park camping trip if you allow them to bring along a DVD player to watch movies in the tent if it’s raining, their mp3 player, handheld video games for night quiet activities in the campground, favorite books, blankets, pillows, and/or stuffed animals. You want to have your children enjoy this unique Zion Park time, not feel like it is “boring” and that there’s nothing to do but “hike” in the sun. Even babies might need that soft music swing or animal to help them relax. It’s also a good idea for each child to have their own personal care items, a travel toothbrush, toothpastes, biodegradable soap or hand wipes, comb, brush, etc. Zions Park, like other camping areas, requires care of the water—be sure you brush your teeth or use your soap (even biodegradable) at least 100 feet away from any water source.
3. Bedding. There’s a different answer for different families. If you’re planning a “car” camping trip, bedding needs to be in rolls with ties so it can be quickly rolled up and put away in the smaller spaces in the car or trunk. If you are choosing to stay in Zion Park lodging, be sure and check what kinds of bedding you might need to bring. Some Zion Park lodging establishments provide bedding. If you’re tent camping, a sleeping bag designed for the weather you could run into at Zions Park (cold to hot depending on the season), a sleeping pad or a cot (if your bones ache), it’s vital that you and your children get a good night sleep away from rocks so you are better able to enjoy the Zion Park experience. The key to any bedding is a good night’s sleep. Happy Zion Park campers are well rested campers.
4. Eating. Eating tasty, well planned meals while you’re camping at Zion National Park is important to a happy camping group. First time campers need to plan and write down their simple meals which don’t require specialized equipment like expensive camp stoves or Dutch ovens. Stick with things your children will eat like cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and maybe hot dogs, hamburgers or stew for dinner. Have enough food so you and your children can “fill up” after a fun day of hiking, fishing, ATV riding, or touring. Zion Park is near Springdale Utah, where there are quick stores and grocery stores to buy fresh meat and vegetables daily, get coals for the fire pit, or pick up items you might have forgotten or chosen to purchase along the way to save packing. You may want to plan a “grocery” run every other day to pick up child friendly treats, meals and milk (a campout is not the time to teach children how to drink non-fat dried milk). Campout foods in Zion Park as well as other places are best kept simple. Remember your children will get hungry every few hours with the hiking, in-park Ranger activities, etc., so make sure you also have healthy enjoyable snacks your kids are used to eating.
5. Packing. Zion National Park is a pack in, pack out park. You should be sure you plan your camping foods, fire pit; campsite is cleaner than you left it. Be sure to plan your camping at Zions around keeping clean items clean and dirty items and from being mixed in with clean items. This is a good time to get a soft carryall for each member of the family so each person’s items are organized and you don’t have to hunt through every bag for something. Be sure to use colorful duct tape to mark each bag with your child’s name. A soft carryall is also more easily packed in the trunk than hard suitcases. The soft carryall can also be used as a pillow for reading at night. Be sure and pack each day’s set of clothing in separate plastic or biodegradable bags. This way, children can just pick out a bag of clothing that has everything for that day, and if someone gets wet from the rain, they can quickly change into dry clothes and put the wet clothing in the reusable bag, keeping clean clothing from getting dirty or wet. You might want to invest in a clothes line that doesn’t damage the trees (Zions Park does not allow nails or other damage to trees), but hooks around the tree, car, or goes from the tent to car so you can dry wet clothing—you don’t want it to mildew.
Have a wonderful trip to Zion National Park. Your camping can be Zion Park friendly with careful planning so begin today. If you’re looking to stay in any Zion Park lodging, make your reservations early.
