Blankets for Babies

When you are expecting your first baby you want to create a lovely environment, and decorate the nursery.  When I was pregnant with my son, a friend of mine who is very creative and good at sewing, offered to make things for the nursery such as curtains, baby blankets and other accessories.  I wasn’t working at the time, so we had a lot of opportunities to shop around for fabric and other bits and bobs.

I didn’t know if I was expecting a boy or a girl so I wanted neutral colours.  We went shopping to a local fabric shop which sells the end of rolls and found some designer baby fabric which had lemon, lime and lilacs colours in the design.  So I decided I would paint the room lilac and use this fabric for the curtains.  There wasn’t quite enough so we used plain fabric on the bottom of the curtains to lengthen it and it looked like a border.  My friend printed the characters from the fabric on the plain fabric at the bottom, so that it all matched.

Because the fabric was from a well known designer of baby products, I was able to order a few matching items to go with it.  So I bought a changing mat, pyjama case teddy and a baby blanket.  I then bought some other cheaper items that either matched or I painted to match, such as picture frames and little draws to store things.  When the room was finished it looked fantastic and it also looked like we’d spent loads of money on it which of course we hadn’t.  I fact I had only bought a few expensive items such as the baby blanket and the rest were very inexpensive or home made. 

What I didn’t expect was that when my son was eventually born, I was given huge piles of gifts, mainly clothes but also quite a few baby blankets.  I thought I would never use them all but in fact it was very handy to have them.  I had enough that I could regularly wash them without running out.  I also was able to keep them in different places.  I had one downstairs, one in the buggy, on in the car.  Now my children are older I have been able to pass them on to other people and most of them are in still fairly good condition.

I have since changed my children’s rooms as they are older and I have found that white is the best option because it makes their rooms light and they can add colour by having bright pictures, clocks and curtains.  It also means that things don’t have to all match, so children can pick items themselves and make things to go in the room.  Gone are all the baby blankets and they have been replaced with bright throws, cushions and beanbags.
