If you are not sure exactly what are essentials for a new baby, it is worth looking at the internet and searching for lists, I found several and they have priority items in one list and then luxury, but not essential in another. It all seems quite daunting although when I look at these lists there are surprisingly few items that you will definitely need. This issue is more that some of them are very expensive and can take up a lot of room in your house. See if you can find items second hand or borrow things, you might find that you don’t actually use some of the items. For example I bought a load of muslins, but because neither of my babies were particularly sick, I never used them. At least they weren’t very expensive, but imagine if you bought a baby carrier for £50 and then never used it!
Here are some essentials for a new baby, baby clothing, car seat, buggy or pram, muslins, baby wipes, cotton wool, changing matt, nappies, blankets or travel wraps, bottles, steriliser, breast pump, cot with mattress, sheets and blankets, flannels and bibs, Moses basket, bouncy chair, sling, baby monitor and nappy wrapper or nappy bags. Remember you can use disposable nappies or washable ones.
As well as essentials for a new baby, you often forget that mum’s need things when they are pregnant and when they have given birth. During pregnancy, maternity or lose fitting clothing, a pillow to help sleep, non under wired bras. When you have had the baby here are some things that new mum’s will find useful, maternity sanitary towels, paper knickers, feeding bras, breast pads.
In addition to this I discovered that the same websites have lists of items you need to take in to hospital if you are having a baby there. So what are essentials for a new baby and you? In your hospital bag you should pack nighty’s or pyjamas, paper knickers, maternity sanitary towels, baby clothes, nursing bras, breast pads, toiletries, nappies, baby blanket, car seat, money and camera! Make sure you get your bag ready well in advance of your due date so you know you are prepared if the baby comes early or you have to go into hospital for any reason.
Essentials for a new baby vary greatly depending on the person and the lifestyle, so it is important to make sure that you think about how you live your life and the kids of things that you think you will find useful. Chat to your friends with babies about what they found useful and why, you can find about some really handy equipment which might really suit your lifestyle and save you time and hassle. They might even be able to loan or give you items for you to try and out and see if you like them.
