For many dog owners, the fear of how their dog will react to the arrival of their new baby can result in many anxious days and sleepless nights.However, there are many steps you can start to take as soon as you find out that you are going to have a baby, which will help the transition to be a smooth one…

Adjust your day to reflect how things will be when baby comes along, since you may find that when the baby arrives you aren’t able to give your dog quite as much time as he is used to.It may also be a good idea to change the time and length of his walks.Your local veterinary practice and your GP may be able to give you some expert advice on what steps to take to prepare for your new babys homecoming.Reinforce your dogs’ obedience training so that you can reliably get him to
carry out your commands.Continue this training after your baby has arrived.You will need to be sure that you can contol your dogs actions once the baby has been born.
Get your dog familiarised with your forthcoming change of routine by pretending to feed or bathe your baby while your dog watches on.Make sure he obeys your commands whilst you carry out these’pretend’ tasks.Wrap a doll in a blanket and let your dog get used to hearing you talking to and cuddling your new baby.Be sure to give your dog a treat for being obedient to your instructions whilst doing this.
Have your dog get used to wearing a muzzle before the baby comes along, so that you can be confident that he will wear it if you need him to when the baby is born.
If the dog is used to getting a lot of attention from the ‘mum to be’, make sure that someone else in the family develops an equally strong relationship with the dog.Doing this will help the dog to feel security within the family upon the new babys arrival.

Let your dog to become familiar with the sounds of the baby toys which will be played with in the house.The dog and baby toys must look very different from each other, so that there isn’t any confusion about which toys the dog thinks he is allowed to play with.
Also, allow you dog to get used to the new smells which will be around the house, such as formula milk and sterilising solution.Once your baby has arrived, bring an item of his clothing home, and leave it lying around for your dog to familiarise himself with the babies smell.Try and arrange for your dog to be cared for in the home whilst the baby is in hospital so that he feels more secure.
