The Choice of an Organic Crib Mattress for Your Baby

You are having your first baby and you want only the very best for your new little one.  Or maybe you already have children and you have learned that there are things you really need to avoid when having a baby so you want to make changes for the new one coming along.  Perhaps you are just trying to make more environmentally friendly choices in your life to live a bit greener. Either way, one of the most important purchases for your new bundle of joy is centred on where that baby sleeps and an organic crib mattress is important to consider.

We have been learning in recent years that our exposure to toxins in the environment is causing a lot of problems, illnesses, allergies, and sensitivities.  This, of course, is even more harmful to children as their systems are still in the developmental stages of life. Babies spend a lot of time sleeping and it is important to ensure that their sleeping area is as healthy as it can be.  This includes what they are sleeping on and an organic crib mattress is the best of the best.

Traditional crib mattresses are generally covered in vinyl and are stuffed with synthetic material that has been treated with a number of nasty chemicals to ensure that it is fireproof.  These chemicals give off harmful gasses and your child breaths in those toxic fumes while they sleep. Such fumes emitted include arsenic, antimony, and phosphorous, just to name a few.  In addition to this, many people are allergic to vinyl, which makes the covering on these mattresses a potential danger as well.

An organic crib mattress is a fantastic option when it comes to your baby’s sleeping area.  It is important to shop around as not all manufacturers offer the same product.  The first consideration is to be sure that the materials in the mattress are 100% organic cotton and/or wool.  Of course, you still want your baby’s mattress to be fire-proof, but the key is to ensure that only natural fire retardants are used on the mattress, such as baking soda and cellulose fibre. Comfort should also be considered, as the organic crib mattress should not be too firm or too soft to endanger your child, as studies have linked mattresses to sudden infant death syndrome.

It is also possible to buy an organic mattress that is made of recycled materials, such as recycled plastic bottles.  This is also a viable and safe option for you baby’s safety while sleeping.  Regardless of what option you choose, nearly every crib mattress manufacturer has an organic crib mattress option so it is important to shop around.  These mattresses will cost a little more money so you will have to take your budget into consideration when shopping.  And remember, not only are you giving your baby the best start when using an organic crib mattress, you are also contributing to a healthy earth and greener lifestyle.
