Written for the seeker with more than a casual interest, The Sage Age – Blending Science with Intuitive Wisdom demystifies complex ideas with intelligent analogies and examples designed to appeal to both the scientist and the natural intuitive. Four years in the writing, this expansive new work combines knowledge from the physical sciences and the intuitive arts to present a visionary perspective that harmonizes these diverse disciplines into one body of knowledge. With a well-researched approach to its subjects, The Sage Age covers a broad range of material from ancient to modern thought, frontier science and current intuitive practice to deliver a depth and breadth of understanding that culminates in a holistic perspective for our time. Middle Age $22.94 Philosopher Christopher Hamilton (who is in his early 40s) provides a philosophical exploration of the moods, emotions, and experiences of middle age in the contemporary world, drawing on personal experiences as well as a wide range of sources – from the philosophical writings of Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Hegel, and Heidegger to the literature of Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Conrad, and the films of Woody Allen – to offer us a philosophy of middle age. Some of the many fascinating themes explored include the strong sense of nostalgia experienced in mid-life for loss for one’s youth and of regret that life has become boring, the recognition that one can never fully escape feelings of guilt, and – central to the experience of middle age – the question of what is the point of going on at all. In the light of the "melancholy wisdom" of mid-life Hamilton suggests that pleasure becomes much more important than at previous stages of life and he shows that the enjoyment of pleasure can be something noble. Insightful, entertaining, and thought-provoking, Middle Age is fascinating reading and for anyone heading for a "mid-life crisis," it is much cheaper than buying a sports car. |

The Tenmile Range $13.12 With her ability to convey the aesthetic purity of an image, we believe that Belle Turnbull is the poet laureate of the Continental Divide, the voice of the mountains. Born in New York in 1882, Turnbull moved to Colorado Springs, CO, with her family at the age of eight. She attended Vassar College and upon graduation, taught high school English in upstate New York for several years. Around 1910, she returned to Colorado Springs and taught high school there until her retirement in 1937. After retiring, she moved to Summit County, CO, high in the Rocky Mountains, where she lived until her death in 1970. Turnbull was enchanted with the mountains and their people. Her love for them never wavered, and she was at her best when writing about them. The Tenmile Range is an homage to those mountains in whose shadows she lived the last three decades of her life. These poems were written over a period of many years and reflect her great skill as a poet. The Tenmile Range was originally published in 1957 by Prairie Press of Iowa City. In 1938, Turnbull received the coveted Harriet Monroe Memorial Prize from Poetry: A Magazine of Verse for a selection of her Probus poems, including "Time as a Wellspring." Another recipient of the award that year was Dylan Thomas. |

The Age of Empires $45.38 The story of thirteen modern empires told with a rich profusion of illustrations drawn from a wide range of vivid, authentic sources. Images of empire are extraordinarily potent. Spanish memories of the Conquistadors; Camoes’ saga of the Portuguese "discoverers," The Lusiads; Pondichery and the other French enclaves in India; the Dutch heritage of trade in the East Indies; above all, perhaps, the colonial gallery of great explorers like Stanley and Livingstone–none of these have lost their resonance. In the modern period of Western history, from the Renaissance until the present, empires in one form or another have been a constant feature of the political landscape. For Germany and Italy, overseas dreams were short-lived; in the United States and the Soviet Union, imperialistic activity existed but was never accepted as an official state policy; and the disappearance of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires has obscured some of the imperial dimensions of these states. But a generation or more after the final collapse of most of the European empires, the subject is still a major issue for historians. This intriguing account raises new subjects, from the roles of women in empire building to food and ecology. It shows how the maps of the explorations, the chronologies of the conquests, the balance sheets of commerce, the pantheons of explorers, settlers, and administrators, and all else that made up the Age of Empires play a key role in explaining the global civilization of today. With contributions by Esther Captain, Jill Dias, Nicholas Doumanis, Josep Fradera, Jacques Fremeaux, Graeme Gill, Kund J. V. Jespersen, Guno Jones, Kirsten MacKenzie, Walter Sauer, FrankSchumacher, Irma Taddia, Jean-Luc Vellut and Joachim Zeller. 300 illustrations, 200 in color. |
